David Thorne is an Australian satirist and New York Times bestselling author. His work has been featured on Have I got News For You, The Ellen DeGeneres Show, The Late Show with David Letterman, and Late Night with Conan O'Brien. He has worked as a graphic designer, copywriter, branding consultant and creative director.
Thorne gained public recognition in 2008 for an email exchange in which he attempted to pay an overdue bill with a drawing of a seven-legged spider. The exchange spread virally leading to a surge of visitors to his website 27b/6. Thorne's first book, The Internet is a Playground - published by Penguin Group and released on 28 April 2011 - debuted at number four on the New York Times Best Seller list.
As of July 2019, The Internet is a Playground has sold over a million copies and has been translated into Japanese, German, French, and Spanish.

David Thorne was born February 23 1972 in Geraldton, Western Australia. He has one sibling; a sister. Thorne's family moved to Adelaide, South Australia, in 1976 where he attended Modbury North Primary school then Banksia Park International High School.
In 1991 Thorne was accepted into the University of South Australia - earning a bachelor's degree in visual communication (graphics). An early adopter of the Macintosh system, Thorne's first job out of university was as a user interface designer for Lakewood Software Engineering. In 1996 he created and implemented the Digiset system for Amcor Australia & NZ. Specialising in the flexographic printing industry, Thorne started E.C.S (Enhanced Communication Services) in 1996, and Network 23 Design Consultants in 1997.
In 2001, Thorne joined de Masi jones, an Adelaide based branding agency, as Design Director. In 2007, Thorne created the website 27bslash6.com. In 2008, he met his (now) wife Holly and they married in 2009.
In 2010, Thorne moved from Australia to the United States and became a permanent resident. In 2011, his first book, The Internet is a Playground, debuted at number four on the New York Times Best Seller list. Thorne currently lives in Virginia with his wife Holly and son Sebastian. He works remotely for a Washington, D.C. based branding agency and spends his spare time writing, playing tennis, riding ATVs, and working on his boat. He also enjoys traveling and is a division 3 competitive sporting clays shooter.
